I started reading Pesthouse by Jim Crace and Grapes of Wrath by John Steinback this holiday seasonPure coincidence that they both had a similar theme. Both describe people dealing with major upheavals as circumstances seen gigantic as compared to the physical and psychological stengths of mere mortals. I am not comparing these books as Grapes of Wrath is altogether in a different league and probably one of the greatest piece of writing I have had the good fortune to read.

Pesthouse is a good book and it is always satisfying to try and like work of a new author (to me).

It describes the travels of two strangers who meet in rather queer circumstance and take on a journey together to find a ‘home’. It is a parable telling us to look inwards rather than moving ceaselessly to search for solutions outwards.

The wind is sharp as a needle – the air is crisp and has a golden hue. It is chilly and there is cheer in the air. The holiday season has come knocking and it is time to finalize the reading list for this christmas.

The holiday reading list!

Walden – Henry Thoreau

Amsterdam – Ian Mcewan

The Seven Pillars of Wisdom – T.E.Lawrence

PestHouse – Jim Crace

The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinback

I expect it to be a blockbuster few weeks.

“It is desirable that a man be clad so simply that he can lay his hands on himself in the dark, and that he live in all respects so compactly and preparedly that, if an enemy take the town, he can, like the old philosopher, walk out of the gate empty-handed without anxiety”.

Walden – Henry D. Thoreau

A journey with Books

December 13, 2010 Leave a comment

I have been thinking long and hard about writing a blog on books I read. The primary reason is to give a structure to my reading and pen my musings for reference at a later date.

Since reading is such an integral part of my life, I tend to regard it as a journey where I gather new experiences with each book and change my life philosophy with some that deeply affect me. It also provides a sense of adventure, as one books leads to another and the chain keeps getting longer – never sure where I will be at the end of the journey.

I wanted to diarize my thoughts as I continue this journey and hence decided to write this blog.

I invite you all to join the journey and wish me luck.
